BAFTA nominations 2009

Kate Winslet dominates the awards circuit, with two nominations for Leading Actress at the 2009 BAFTAs.

Yawn. We had to get up pretty early to check out this year's BAFTA nominations (check out the full list here), but we're glad we did, because - unsurprisingly - the Brits have done it again. Kate Winslet will have woken up with a smile, picking up two nominations for Leading Actress for Revolutionary Road and The Reader. (Why has her role in The Reader been upgraded from Supporting Actress to Leading Actress? Because she's British, dammit!)

Meanwhile, the Slumdog Millionaire Express continues apace, garnering 11 nominations including Best Movie (can you say 'sure thing'?), Best Director for Danny Boyle and nods for Leading Actor Dev Patel (instead of Benicio Del Toro in Che? Really?) and Supporting Actress Freida Pinto (presumably just so the Bollywood beauty turns up).

Surprises? Few and far between, really. It’d be nice if the early promise shown by The Dark Knight translated into a Best Movie nomination, but we suppose Heath Ledger’s nod for Best Supporting Actor is reward enough. We’re glad Brad Pitt’s manic contribution to Burn After Reading was recognised – if there was a category for Best Haircut, his gym bunny would have it sewn up.

Perhaps most interesting of all is the Rising Star award, rounding up five prodigious young talents to watch for the future (past winners include James McAvoy, Eva Green and Shia LaBeouf). Vicky Cristina Barcelona’s Rebecca Hall will probably win, but for our money you can’t top the awkward comic timing of former Arrested Development alumni Michael Cera – we love that little guy.

So, expect Slumdog to walk off with the big’uns, Winslet to trounce her fellow actresses (with two nominations herself, that’s one less name to remember) and a feeling of déjà vu as the Golden Globe winners come up trumps again. Come on you Brits!

I do not think SLUMDOG merits all the accolades and nominations that has been heaped on it. As for Kate Winslet, she is not a bad actress, but she is definitely not a great one. Both Meryl and Angelina out classed her.

    Yay Les from Bristol!!
And Sue (from Porlock)- can I watch?
She is, indeed, the greatest. And the most beautiful. Her acceptance speeches were funny, gracious, humble, spontaneous and above all genuine. If you who find Kate's emotional honesty uncomfortable that's your problem not Kate's.
She is wonderful and she is one of ours. We should be proud.
    All hail Queen Kate!
