Festivals defy recession

Festival season is well and truly upon us and many people have decided to forgo their annual summer holiday for a weekend in a muddy field instead.

Camping may sound like a cheaper option, but a recent study showed that the average cost of a festival weekend is a whopping £600.

The biggest outlay is of course the ticket itself at an average of £140 - not bad if you take into account how many bands you get to see over the weekend, but the study did highlight a slightly alarming statistic - the average festival goer spends £130 on booze.

Now even at inflated prices of £4 a pint, that's more than 30 pints over a three-day period. You've got to wonder how much of the festival experience you'll actually remember if that's true.

New clothes and camping gear also accounts for £170 of the festival spend, travel costs on average £100 while food comes in cheapest at £60.

If you are planning on going to a festival this summer, then there's plenty of amazing places to choose from, check out our festival guide for some inspiration. And if you've already got your ticket, then make sure you stay safe - our festival survival guide has some top tips on how to enjoy yourself without losing your phone/money/dignity. The survey of 3,000 festival fanatics was commissioned by the Lovebox Weekender.
