Keane and U2's technological triumphs

Modern technology: is it the scourage of the music industry or its saviour? Some new ventures by two of the UK's biggest bands.

On the same day that U2 announced their 360 degree live show – also known as a smart new way to sell even more concert tickets – a couple more technological advancements in the field of live concerts.

Having been among the first bands to release music on a USB stick, use Twitter and invent time travel, Sussex gentlemen Keane will be the first ever band to screen a live 3D concert on the internet.

“On April 2nd at 8pm, hundreds of thousands of those fans will be able don their 3D glasses and watch us play some songs from our new record, Perfect Symmetry,” say Tom, Tim and Richard. “We will be broadcasting from Abbey Road, scene of the first ever live satellite broadcast - The Beatles All You Need Is Love - and we hope that this will become a similarly powerful new way for music to connect people all over the world.”

Indeed it will but only if you’ve got those glasses. Otherwise it will give you a headache. To get them you need to visit keane.com or take the unprecedented step of buying Keane’s new single in one of those olde fashioned record emporiums.

Such techno shenanigans rather put the Super Furry Animals big news in the shade but they too are taking a bold new step for rock kind this Friday (the 13th) when they will be performing their new album live for the first time at 8pm in a live gig webcast at superfurry.com – with a download of the album available as soon as the show starts (a month before it’ll be available on CD).
