Does Heath Ledger deserve an Oscar?

With the first anniversary of Heath Ledger's death and the 2009 Oscar nomination announcements falling in the same week, we ask: does Ledger’s performance as The Joker warrant a nomination?

Out of all the people we’ve discussed The Dark Knight with, the one thing everyone seems to agree on (apart from Christian Bale’s silly Bat-voice) is that Heath Ledger is incredible as The Joker. The question is, was it an awards-worthy performance?

Sure, in the last week Ledger has won a Golden Globe and been nominated for a BAFTA. But will he bag an Oscar? We reckon the Academy would be mad to ignore Ledger’s name when it comes to announcing the nominations on Thursday (particularly because most of his contemporaries have already said they’ll vote for him), but as for the big win… well, the jury’s out.

    It's unfair to the other nominees. If he truly deserved an award, which i don't doubt he did, there should have been a special award for him- so that the other nominees actually had a chance. Sorry, that's my two cents. Not saying he wasn't deserving though.

    he so truly does his films he did before he died were fantastic and it is sad he only came to attention when he died if he was still alive he would have recieved an oscar for future roles he would have played rip heath

    without question, keep it real, his role as the joker was beyond magnificient, an oscar worthy performance without question
