We've been raised on a diet of action movies for our entire lives, but one question has always nagged us: Just who is the greatest movie action hero of all time? Well… we decided to find out with a knockout tournament, as voted for by you, the Virgin Media reader.
First of all, we drafted a list of 16 of the greatest action heroes ever together. The qualifiers were brutal, but we had a few ground rules to follow. Firstly, only one character per actor – otherwise the whole shebang may well have been Schwarzenegger versus Stallone. Secondly, no sci-fi or horror – supernatural powers are cheating. Finally, no hitting the face or pulling hair. We're kidding of course. This could get dirty.
Then we made the draw. The top seeds avoided each other, so we've got eight evenly matched fights. Now it's up to you. Vote for your favourite in each bout, then check back on Tuesday 22 September at 4pm for the results and the Quarter Finals, where you can resume voting.

We'll be updating this blog accordingly with all the scores, upsets and disputes so make sure you swing by. And if, for whatever reason, one of your favourite action heroes didn't make the grade, feel free to rant your guts out on the boards below.
