Star Trek Into Darkness blasts into cinemas on May 9th, and with it comes a legacy that spans over 40 years of exploring the deepest, darkest recesses of the universe. To celebrate the crew of the Enterprise's new adventure, we boldly look back at the franchise to dig out 50 fascinating facts you might not have known about Star Trek...

Hello again, film fans. It'd be easier to report on what hasn't happen in the world of movies over the last week, but... actually... no, that'd be a logistical nightmare. I really don't have time to do that. I'll just stick with the stuff that did happen. There's a lot of it, but not compared to literally every single thing that didn't happen. What was I thinking!

The current state of superhero cinema

When Joss Whedon's superhero mash-up Avengers Assemble took a wrecking ball to half of NYC last summer, it wasn't just downtown Manhattan that got razed to the ground. Box-office records tumbled like bricks, as if Mjölnir itself had been swung tumultuously into the face of audience apathy, and crushed all that early scepticism into space dust.

The Sun - the tabloid that everyone trusts - are reporting that all four Inbetweeners cast members have signed up for a sequel that will take Simon, Will, Neil and Jay backpacking in Australia. Expect lots of jokes like "How about a blow on my didgeridoo?" or "I'll introduce potentially harmful foreign flora and fauna to her wild environment" and so on. This thing writes itself!

Paint by numbers coming-of-age caper 21 & Over lands in cinemas this week. The film, which borrows heavily from the crazy-night-out premise popularised by hits like The Hangover; is something of a love letter to the beer pongs, pep rallies and sexually promiscuous sorority girls that have become synonymous with this particular brand of teen comedy.

In retrospect, Sylvester Stallone's Oscar-winning underdog tale Rocky is the perfect template for a musical. It has heart, it has soul, it has characters who rise above the odds to become more than they ever thought they could be, and most importantly, it has oh so many uplifting moments where Stallone breaks into song. Okay, maybe not that last part.

Welcome to another extremely irregular movie news round-up! It's been a busy seven days in the world of movies, so without further ado, let's roll up our sleeves and plunge into this week's news, right up to the elbow.

That ridiculously loud clattering sound you can hear is Iron Man 3 crashing into cinemas, with Robert Downey Jr once again playing… well, himself, basically. How does one follow the box office behemoth that was The Avengers? You can almost picture the scene: a room full of Marvel executives celebrating their billion dollar success, popping champagne corks and letting off party streamers, until the slow, dawning realisation creeps in to their collective consciousness and their smiles begin to slide… 'How are we supposed to top this?' It's little wonder Tony Stark can't sleep.
