Review: Carol

Skilfully adapted from Patricia Highsmith's lesbian romance novel The Price of Salt (published pseudonymously in 1952, when its subject was still taboo), Todd Haynes' Carol is an exquisitely realised and achingly moving love story that's certain to garner plenty of richly deserved awards attention.

2014 Oscar predictions

The 86th Academy Awards are still months away, but that won't stop us engaging in some vaguely informed conjecture about the nominees and winners of the 2014 Oscars. Wthout further ado, here are our tips for the top come March 2nd…

Eleven years ago Halle Berry told Hollywood's Kodak Theatre and the billions of people watching that her Oscar win was "for every nameless, faceless woman of colour who now has a chance because this door has been opened". Have things changed for black actresses? Not really, but how could you expect them to when the only woman of African-American descent to have won the Best Actress statue can't even sort out her own career?

Now the dust has settled on the 2013 Academy Awards, wide discontent has been expressed over host Seth MacFarlane's misogynistic brand of humour. You could say his routine – including a musical number addressing prominent Hollywood actresses called 'I Saw Your Boobs' – did not go down well with the majority. Some have labelled him "sexist", others charge him with being "frattish"; Chicago Sun-Times columnist Tom Shales said MacFarlane's comedy was met with the sounds of "a billion people throwing up". My only question is this: what else did you expect from Seth MacFarlane?

Though it wasn't a night for surprises, the 85th Academy Awards was packed full of crowd-pleasing victories, with Oscars for Ben Affleck's CIA thriller Argo, a record-breaking Daniel Day-Lewis, the clumsy Jennifer Lawrence and Bond singer Adele.

Hostage thriller Argo picked up three Baftas at last night's awards ceremony, including Best Film and Best Director for Ben Affleck, begging the question: can the male half of Bennifer actually take his little movie all the way to Oscar success?
